Explore the fascinating history of the knights of the Order of Malta on this guided tour of Ulldecona Castle, an impressive fortress listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the province of Tarragona.
We will meet at 5:00 p.m. at the Ulldecona Tourist Office. After the presentations, we will head towards the imposing medieval castle, located on a hill in this charming Tarragona municipality.
During our guided tour, we will discover the various historical stages that marked the evolution of this fortress, from the Iberian era to the Reconquista and the presence of the knightly orders.
We will explore the walled complex and observe the vestiges of the 8th century Arab fortress, as well as the defensive towers and structures after the Reconquista. We will highlight one of the watchtowers, with a square plan, built by the Order of the Hospital, also known as the Order of Malta, which still exists today.
We will delve into the history of the Knights Hospitaller and contemplate the ruins of the ancient Christian church of Santa María de los Ángeles.
We will conclude our tour at 6:00 p.m. at the entrance of the castle.
